Cambridge Academy of English - Cambridge English Language School

The school is located in attractive premises in a very safe residential area on the outskirts of Cambridge (15 minutes by bus from the town centre), with all host families within easy reach of the school.

The facilities include a self-access study centre (with a multimedia room, a library, and a computer room), a common room, a student club and free internet access.

The Cambridge Academy of English is an international centre and attracts students of all ages and nationalities who wish to learn English in a friendly, hard-working environment. We aim to offer every student who comes to CAE not just classes in English as a foreign language, but a full experience of English life and culture.

Our motto at CAE is 'England is our Classroom'. In other words, your English learning is not just during class - it should go on everywhere and all the time. It is also outside the classroom that you can best train the independent learning skills that will enable you to continue developing your English when you return home at the end of your course.

Here are some of the ways in which we will help you work towards this aim, particularly in the period from October to June:

• Lessons encourage interaction with the English-speaking environment by helping you develop your communication and information-gathering skills, and by giving you tasks that involve using the environment.
• Your host family offer you the ideal opportunity to practise your English and discuss daily events and topics of interest in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere.
• Regular study trips to local places and organisations of interest as part of the academic programme.

Professional Center

The Professional Centre is an attractive training centre in the Cambridge suburb of Girton. The building is small, intimate and friendly, even during the busiest periods there are never more than 19 clients attending courses. The minimum age for enrolment is 25. The atmosphere is mature and businesslike, tranquil and friendly.

We will give you a security keycard so that you can get into the centre at evenings and during the weekends. You will have free access to our mini-lab, audio/visual library, reference material, computers and e-mail and internet facilities.

You can make yourself a hot drink while you prepare a presentation, work on your specific language weaknesses or just enjoy a good film with your fellow students. We know that learning doesn't stop when the classes end, so we provide plenty of opportunity for private study.

Courses for Young Learners

Our teenage homestay courses are all in Girton, Cambridge. These 3-week summer courses give you the chance to study and have fun at CAE and live in one of our local homestays. There are lots of things for you to enjoy : lessons, sports, activities and excursions. It's a great way to spend your summer holidays !

Adult Intensive/Examination Courses

Course structure Courses at CAE run non-stop throughout the year except for a 2- to 3-week break over the Christmas period (second half of December). The CAE academic year is divided into four seasonal programmes: Winter, Spring, Summer, and Autumn. The Winter, Spring and Autumn programmes each consist of 12 weeks subdivided into three modules of 4 weeks.

Starting your course Entry into courses at CAE is very flexible so that you can start your course most Mondays in the year. However, it is generally better to start your course at the beginning of a 12-week programme or at the start of a 4-week module.

Length of your studies

Summer Courses for Adults

The Summer programme is divided into 4 courses - F1, F2 , F3 (each lasting 3 weeks) and F4 (which lasts 4 weeks). These courses are designed in such a way that, if you stay on for more than one course, you will not have to repeat any work. The emphasis at all times is on improving your ability to communicate in English.

In the mornings you will be in a class with other students of your level; in the afternoons, you will be able to choose an "elective", including "English for Business", "Drama"', "Cambridge Life"' and "English through Song".

After classes, there is a very full daily programme of social activities and sports (including tennis, football, and volley ball) at no extra charge. At the weekends, there are excursions to London and other tourist resorts in the UK as an optional extra.

English for Law Students

This is an intensive skills-based course for advanced students of law and young practising lawyers. The minimum age is normally 20. It is designed and taught by teachers experienced in law and in the teaching of English for law.

The emphasis at all times is on communication and language skills, primarily within the context of Contract, Commercial Law, and European Union law: - communication skills : e.g. negotiating a contract, eliciting facts, presenting data. - reading skills : understanding the language and analysing the structure of legal sources (e.g. statutes, law reports, European Union directives). - writing skills : drafting legal documents (e.g. contracts, letters). - vocabulary : systematic development of legal and general English vocabulary. The course also includes meetings with members of the legal profession, a full-day study trip to legal institutions in London, and a visit to local law courts.

Free Time

Your English learning is not just during class - it should go on everywhere and all the time. That is why there are all kinds of original and interesting events in and outside CAE most evenings of the year - and every evening during the summer. We can also help you take full advantage of Cambridge - one of the world's great student cities!

We also help you to get to know Britain: there is at least one excursion every weekend and, in the course of each season, we offer a very extensive programme of excursions to all parts of the UK - including London, Stratford/Warwick, Scotland (2- to 3-day trip at budget prices), Oxford, Brighton, and Liverpool.

Sport: you can play volleyball, tennis and football at no extra cost. If you have other sports interests (e.g. horse-riding, rowing) we will help you locate suitable facilities.
